I think it has taken my 25 years to truly understand the art form of writing. I wish very much that I had been inspired by gifted writers much earlier on in the process of teaching my kids to write.

I relied too much on textbooks and daily writing assignments and grammar rules. People that love to write start out more in a curious, dreamy, imaginative state. I think that is so important for kids at home.

It's so hard, though. Because just like us, they are little perfectionists. They see the whole world writing perfect little letters and when their hand won't do it....they feel like a failure.

The early stages of writing require daily commitment but also a daily goal of visualizing the letters, sounds, words, and ideas. Each year they start again from where they are and re-visit all the basic tools but from the next level of experience and capability.

When you begin make a plan for learning another language to apply grammar rules, writing short sentences under pictures, scrapbooks, and little logbooks. Have journal books where they can create creative stories each day or journal out a special day. Have them practice writing thank you cards for an assignment with templates they can copy. Have them make a secret game where they leave notes for their sibilings. Point out cool sentences from great books you have read together. Find visuals that show grammar rules in a fun way!

It is a daily journey to learn to write well. It takes patience, understanding, and an open mind. Keep at it! It comes over time and the reward makes it worth it!
